Medical Needs Teaching Service

Leeds Children's Hospital

Young people who are in-patients at Leeds Children's Hospital receive daily teaching from MNTS staff either in 'The Learning Zone' classroom or at the bedside, following medical advice from ward staff. A daily timetable is created to meet the needs of all inpatients of school age. Personalised Education Plans are in place for all young people to record lesson content, aims, progress and engagement.

Education staff work in some clinics and as part of multi-disciplinary teams. For long term and recurrent young people we liaise closely with their school to ensure good progress. After discharge we can support with reintegration and home teaching referrals to all local authorities.

Our starting point is always the individual child or young person and their specific education needs. Specialist SEND, primary and secondary teachers deliver sessions and liaise closely with schools. We offer engaging, creative approaches as a bridge to learning, delivered by specialist education support staff. These sessions introduce the students to our offer and enrich the curriculum.

Education staff are part of several multi-disciplinary teams, communicating regularly, and taking part in joint working, with NHS colleagues at Leeds Children’s Hospital to support further progress.

After discharge we can support with reintegration and home teaching referrals to all local authorities.
